On 18 August 2020 a telephone conversation was held between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of the European Council Charles Michel.
The conversation, which took place ahead of the European Council meeting, focused on the current situation in Belarus. Vladimir Putin expressed concern in connection with some countries’ attempts to put pressure on the Belarusian leadership and destabilise the internal political situation.
The parties expressed interest in preventing a confrontational scenario.
