On 8 October 2021 Director of Latin American Department of the Russian MFA, Special Representative of the Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean Aleksander Shchetinin held consultations in Moscow on Latin America with EEAS Managing Director for the Americas Javier Niño Pérez.
An extensive exchange of views took place on a wide range of issues on the Latin American agenda. Examining individual country issues, the officials emphasised the need to comply with universally recognised norms of international law, the principles of respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states. The sides addressed the particular features of the development of political processes in the Latin American region, as well as the prospects for integration building.
The assistance provided by Russia and the European Union to Latin American and Caribbean states to deal with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic was also discussed.
