The State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Grigory Karasin, received on May 20 the Director of the Policy Unit at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, Helga Schmid.
An exchange of views took place on individual issues in the relations of Russia and the European Union with the CIS countries and Georgia. Particular attention was devoted to the developments in Kyrgyzstan, and to the preparations for a referendum on the draft of a new Constitution of the republic.
During the course of the meeting, questions of the Transnistrian conflict settlement were discussed, particularly with regard to the recently signed Joint Statement of the Presidents of the Russian Federation and Ukraine on the Transnistrian settlement.
Also discussed was the preparation for the Geneva discussions on stability and security in Transcaucasia to be held in June.
Individual aspects of relations with Ukraine and Belarus were touched on.
