Day of the Unknown Soldier Commemorated in Brussels

On 3 December 2023, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Mission to the EU Kirill Logvinov laid flowers at the tombs of Soviet citizens who had died in the fight against Nazism at the Evere communal cemetery.

The Brussels monument is one of many burial sites of Soviet soldiers, prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates on the territory of European countries. These places are sacred to Russians. We appreciate the efforts of those who ensure preservation of the graves and the memorial sites located on them.

Yet, not all EU Member States duly honour the memory of soldiers who fought shoulder to shoulder, regardless of nationality, to liberate Europe from the brown plague. Some even undertake blasphemous attempts to destroy historical monuments and thereby erase the memory about the events of those terrible years.

We reiterate our call on the EU institutions to respond to the degrading situation with regard to the preservation of cultural and memorial heritage sites and World War II remembrance in a number of EU countries.
