The statements made by the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission during the debates in the European Parliament on 13 June 2023 do not stand up to criticism. It was yet another opportunity for the European public to hear unsubstantiated accusations of destroying the Kakhovka hydropower plant levelled at Russia. To make it more convincing, a new "crime" was invented citing certain sources – an alleged shelling by the Russian military of Ukrainian rescuers heading for the emergency area.
This is among a plethora of other cases that are fully in line with EU “rules to fight Russian disinformation”, whereby any crime committed by Kiev is automatically attributed to our country. Such “rules” do not provide for using alternative sources of information, nor do they involve taking facts and evidence into account. Brussels prefers to pretend it has heard nothing about the Russian Federation's warning to the UN Secretary General and the Security Council about Kiev's plans to attack the hydropower plant. Nor do they want to recall the interview Ukrainian General Andrey Kovalchuk gave to “The Washington Post” on 29 December 2022, speaking of the strike launched from the US-made HIMARS MLRS at one of the floodgates of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Ukraine`s blowing up of the Tolyatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline, key to global food security, has been totally ignored here. In doing so, Brussels has once again revealed its "double standards".
A question remains unanswered and, actually, not even raised in the European Parliament – what kind of weapons the Ukrainians employ to sabotage critical civilian infrastructure. We are ready to fill this gap – such crimes are facilitated by the uncontrolled pumping of Ukraine with Western weapons, including those supplied by EU Member States. And while the EU provides massive military support, no one can guess what other plans, similar to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydro-electric power station, are nurtured in Kiev.
