Comment on the EU statement regarding Russian presidential election, 18 March 2024

We see time and again how anxious the European Union is about the electoral processes in third countries. One might ask: shouldn't Brussels consider taking a closer look at developments within the EU? Surely other states would be interested to know and understand the direction in which the European integration union is moving today. And if the EU is so concerned about electoral matters, its own vote will take place in a few months' time already. This will certainly be a good opportunity for Brussels to discuss cracking down on dissenting views of the parties and movements outside the political mainstream, or restricting access to alternative sources of information.

As long as Brussels finds it so important to comment on the will expressed by Russian citizens, it faces a very simple dilemma: to congratulate the elected President of Russia or not. Otherwise, the meaning of the EU statement of 18 March 2024 would probably be clear only to its authors.
