Comment by the Russian Permanent Mission to the EU for TASS News Agency regarding the EU’s Intention to Provide Lethal Support to its Partner Countries under the European Peace Facility

Question: Could you please comment on the statement made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell at the Schuman Security and Defence Forum claiming that the EU intends to provide lethal support to its partner countries, as it does to Ukraine, under the European Peace Facility?

Answer: This is not just another confirmation that the EU economy is going military, but a very official bid by Brussels to transform itself from a trade and economic integration alliance into a militarist bloc – and an aggressive rather than defensive one at that.

The purpose of convening the forum was obvious to us – to bring third countries under the anti-Russian banner on the pretext of defending the "rules-based order" invented by the West. But few would have guessed how far the EU would go with its particularly tempting initiatives, cynically wrapped up in the requests it allegedly receives from its partners. A kind of “Ukrainian special offer”. It was not enough for the EU that its massive deliveries of lethal weapons to Ukraine – with no one in control of what happens to them next – further contributed to an escalation of the Ukrainian conflict. Now Brussels seems to be determined to follow the same pattern and flood the world with arms. Meanwhile, one cannot ignore the fact that the free nature of such "aid" is indeed conditional. In the current geopolitical context, the sovereignty of foreign policy will be the price to be paid by its recipients.
