Comment by Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Mission to the EU Kirill Logvinov for TASS News Agency on elections to the European Parliament, 6 June 2024

European elections increasingly resemble a political show, with certain elements of immersive theatre, directed by the Eurobureaucracy. Suffice it to look at the emphases placed by the European ruling elite on the eve of the vote. First of all, they want to keep the existing political landscape in the European Parliament as much as possible. This includes ensuring support for Ursula von der Leyen, the “European bureaucracy’s single candidate” for the post of head of the European Commission. At the same time, Brussels does not hesitate to talk about the need to prevent the emergence of factions in the European Parliament, which, once on the rostrum, could disturb the quiet of the EU political mainstream. In other words, they want to shield themselves from MEPs representing the interests of voters who are extremely dissatisfied with the current EU policy.

All this is undoubtedly evidence of the deep political crisis that the EU is currently experiencing. Under the pretext of the "Russian threat" and the changed geopolitical context, the efforts of the EU's Brussels are aimed at strengthening the existing system, which has no interest in new European leaders. After all, it is possible that the latter would point out the disastrous mistakes for which the current politicians refuse to take responsibility.
