Comment by Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Mission to the EU Kirill Logvinov for TASS News Agency on Schuman Security and Defence Forum, 29 May 2024

In an environment where the European Union is driven solely by ideology and bloc thinking, rather than European interests and common sense, I doubt that Brussels is really in a position to offer a security model to third countries.

First, we see that the EU can only ensure its own security at the expense of the security of others. Accordingly, the expansion of its cooperation framework with the announced "new security and defence partnerships" will mean, from the outset, ignoring the interests of those actors who refuse to play by the EU's rules and follow the principle of "those who are not with us are against us". Today, Brussels is clearly incapable of presenting a unifying agenda. Moreover, the division into "the garden" and "the jungle" is still there.

Second, the over-ideologised European Union has a distorted perception of current challenges and threats. The attempt to impose it on the Global Majority during the first forum in March 2023, as we recall, ended in failure. Over the past year, the countries of the Global South and East have accumulated even more questions to ask Brussels whose geopolitical ambitions are ever-growing. With each passing day, it is becoming more and more clear that all "initiatives" of the European Union are based on its own purely opportunistic interests, which are aimed at a single goal: trying by various means to preserve the past "dominance" of the West at the current stage of tectonic changes in the architecture of international relations.

Third, given the decline of the Western culture of diplomacy and its increasing adherence to the policy of "double standards" in world affairs, the European Union needs more than ever to get tangible evidence of its imagined geopolitical role and importance on the world stage. The means to achieve this is a marginal issue for Brussels.

One final point. Similarly to the first forum, the EU is undoubtedly trying to force discussions on support for Ukraine on its participants. I am quite sure that on the sidelines of the event attempts are being made to "persuade" representatives of third countries to participate in the so-called "peace conference" in Switzerland, which is essentially an anti-Russian crowd shot in a film about how to help the West save face and get away with the Ukrainian crisis that it has provoked. Well, I think the EU officials could not resistbegging for Soviet/Russian-made arms from third countries to be diverted to Kiev. In fact, Brussels has long since opened an "arms scrap yard" for the Ukrainian armed forces.
