Exhibition at the European Commission on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the space flight of Yury Gagarin


On 4 April 2011 an exhibition devoted to the 50th anniversary of the first-ever manned space flight opened in the Breydel building of the European Commission.

The exhibition is organized by the Russian Permanent Mission to the EU in co-operation with the European Commission, European Space Agency, Russian Federal Space Agency and the European Space Centre. Dozens of photos and a number of models of Russian spacecrafts and carrier rockets are presented at the exhibition covering the historical space flight of Yury Gagarin and further facts of space exploration, including Russia-EU space co-operation achievements.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Heinz Zourek, Director-General of the European Commission for Enterprise and Industry; Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov, Permanent Representative of Russia to the EU; Frank De Winne, Belgian cosmonaut, as well as heads of missions accredited to the EU, staff members of the European Commission and media representatives.

In his opening speech Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov recalled a similar exposition held at the European Parliament on 21-25 March and stressed the historic importance of Yury Gagarin’s space flight. He deliberated on the current development of space co-operation, including outstanding examples of numerous space flights of representatives of dozens of countries, construction of the International Space Station as well as fruitful co-operation between the Russian Federal Space Agency, the European Union and the European Space Agency.

The exhibition will remain open until 22 April 2011.
