Russian and EU experts discuss migration and development issues


The third expert meeting of the Russia-EU Dialogue on Migration dedicated to migration and development issues was held on 26 October 2012 in Saint Petersburg.

Participants from the Russian side included representatives of competent authorities: Federal Migration Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Labour, Central Bank, as well as Permanent Mission to the EU. From the EU there were experts from the Commission and 11 Member States. Representatives of the International Organization for Migration, Moscow bureau on human rights, St. Petersburg Center for International cooperation of the Red Cross and Russian bureau of World Bank also took part in the meeting.

Parties exchanged information and practice on interaction of migration and development including impact on the economy of countries of destination and origin. They discussed development of the flows of remittances, facilitation of integration of migrants including by means of return migration. Further prospects of Russia-EU cooperation were identified at the meeting.

The fourth session on legal migration is to be organized before the end of 2012.

The Russia-EU Dialogue on Migration was launched in May 2011. During 2011 and 2012 the expert meetings on international protection and on illegal migration were held respectively on 14 December 2011 in Moscow and on 30 March 2012 in Budapest.
