Regular Russia – EU expert consultations held on Western Balkans and EU Enlargement


On 1 December regular Russia – EU expert consultations on Western Balkans (COWEB) and EU Enlargement (COELA) were held in Brussels within the established framework of Russia – EU Political Dialogue.

Ambassador Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko, Director of the 4th European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Russian delegation. The EU was represented by Mr. Eduard Auer, Head of Western Balkans Division of the European External Action Service, and Ms Airi Alakivi, deputy chair of COELA capitals format from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.

An interested and constructive discussion was held on a broad range of issues related to the situation in Western Balkans, as well as relations of Russia and the European Union with countries of the region, including in the context of the latters’ accession negotiations with the EU.

An understanding was confirmed to hold the next round of the COWEB / COELA consultations in the first half of 2018.
