Russia and EU hold counterterrorism negotiations

On 8 February negotiations on international cooperation in countering terrorism were held in Moscow between a Russian inter-agency delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Mr. Oleg Syromolotov, and a European Union delegation headed by Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Mr. Pedro Serrano.

A thorough exchange of views and assessments was held of the current state of global and regional terrorist threats and experience gained in countering terrorism in Russia and the EU. Special focus was made on preventing activities of “foreign terrorist fighters”, combating the spread of terrorist and extremist ideology and radicalisation, including in the Internet, fighting terrorism financing and ensuring anti-terrorist safety of civil aviation.

Prospects of enhancing anti-terrorist cooperation in multilateral formats, primarily in the UN, were also considered.

The Russian side reaffirmed the need for the international community as a whole to join efforts in combating the global threat of terrorism on the basis of international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

It was agreed to hold the next round of negotiations in Brussels.
