MFA Spokesman's Comment on a UN peacekeeping operation in Ukraine

Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich regarding a UN peacekeeping operation in Ukraine

It has come to our attention that the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council has decided to ask the UN and the EU to deploy a peacekeeping operation on its territory.

The details of this initiative are unknown to us. The goals and mandate of a possible peacekeeping operation are unclear.

We proceed from the premise that the efforts to solve the Ukraine crisis should be based on the provisions of the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements of February 12 for which the UN Security Council voted in its Resolution 2202, and which was unanimously adopted on February 17.

The document states in no uncertain terms that “reinstatement of full control of the state border by the government of Ukraine throughout the conflict area should start on the first day after the local elections and end after the comprehensive political settlement.”

Regarding the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of disengagement, “the process shall be facilitated by the OSCE supported by the Trilateral Contact Group.”
The OSCE is also expected “to ensure effective monitoring and verification of the ceasefire regime.”

We are confident that the main responsibility for the comprehensive implementation of the Minsk agreements rests with the parties to the conflict in Ukraine.
