Comment on the Euronews TV channel’s coverage of the latest events in Ukraine

Comment by the Russian MFA Information and Press Department on the Euronews TV channel’s coverage of the latest events in Ukraine

Despite the relatively balanced information policy of the Euronews TV channel, we regret to note that some of the latest events in Ukraine, following the resumption by Kiev of full-scale hostilities against the DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic) and the LPR (Lugansk People’s Republic) in breach of all of the earlier reached ceasefire agreements, above all, the September Minsk Protocol and Memorandum (2014), are being covered somewhat lopsidedly. The loss of life among civilians resulting from massive artillery shelling by Ukrainian troops as well as the assessments of the OSCE special monitoring mission in its fresh reports on the situation in eastern Ukraine are all being hushed up.

Euronews has failed to mention the OSCE mission’s conclusions, contained in its report, which disprove the hasty accusations made by the West of the self-defence forces’ alleged involvement in shelling the bus near Volnovakha.

That is evidently not due to the fact that the journalists are poorly informed, but due to a meeting of the Council of the European Union at a foreign minister level, which began today, on 19 January. Apparently, Europe is finding it quite awkward to tell the whole truth about the situation in Ukraine and to openly cite its primary causes. Criticism of Kiev remains undesirable. What is especially perplexing is that Euronews persists in its editorial policy in spite of attempts by the Kiev leadership to shut down the channel’s Ukrainian version.
