Russian and EU experts discussed migration and development issues, as well as international protection


The 6th thematic meeting of the Russia-EU Dialogue on Migration dedicated to migration/development and international protection issues was held on 6 and 7 February 2014 in Stockholm.

Russian participants included experts from competent authorities: Federal Migration Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Regional Development, Central Bank, as well as Permanent Mission to the EU. From the EU there were representatives from the Commission, the Greek Presidency of the EU Council, the European External Action Service and 18 Member States. Representatives of the UNHCR also took part in the meeting.

The Parties discussed prospects of engaging the migration potential to contribute economic development of countries and promoting cooperation in this field in international and regional formats, including the UN High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development. They exchanged information and practice on interaction of migration and development, including impact on the economy of countries of destination and origin as well as development of systems of remittances, facilitation of integration of migrants. Further steps in practical work of the Russia-EU Dialogue on Migration were identified at the meeting.
The next thematic session is to take place in Moscow.

The Russia-EU Dialogue on Migration was launched in May 2011. During 2011, 2012 and 2013 there were the expert meetings on international protection in Moscow on 14 December 2011, on illegal migration in Budapest on 30 March 2012, on migration and development in Saint Petersburg on 26 October 2012, on legal migration in Bratislava on 7 February 2013 and on illegal migration in Kaliningrad on 4 and 5 July 2013.
