On 4 September 2020 Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko received the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Russian Federation Markus Ederer.

In the course of the meeting prospects of Russia-EU relations were discussed, as well as a number of topical international issues, including the state of affairs in Belarus. The Russian side emphasised the importance of settling the situation by Belarusians themselves within legal framework and without external interference in domestic political processes in the country.

Following the declaration of 3 September 2020 made by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on behalf of the EU regarding the situation around Alexey Navalny, it was noted that it is inadmissible to politicise this issue and launch unsubstantiated accusations in “megaphone diplomacy” style. The need was stressed to involve existing Russian-German legal mechanisms on the basis of the request by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation for exchange of information and clarification of the real circumstances of what happened.
