Russia-EU consultations on drugs

Another round of expert consultations on drugs in the framework of Russia-EU political dialogue was held in Brussels on 4 September 2012.

The Russian delegation led by Mr. D.Kurakov, Deputy Director of the Department on New Challenges and Threats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included experts of the Federal Drug Control Service, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Public Health and Permanent Mission to the EU. The EU was represented at the meeting by experts of the Cyprus Presidency, European Commission, EEAS, Europol, European Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction as well as by observers from nine Member States.

Participants discussed a wide range of issues including the drug situation in the EU and Russia. They highlighted the necessity to intensify joint efforts to combat trafficking in drugs originating from Afghanistan as well as synthetic drugs and psychoactive substances. It was agreed to enhance sharing of experience in rehabilitation of drug addicts.

The experts reviewed the state of cooperation between relevant anti-drugs agencies and identified areas for enhancing joint actions within international and regional formats.
