On 11 June a state reception on the occasion of Russia Day was held at the Russian Embassy in Belgium. Permanent Representative of Russia to the EU, Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belgium Alexander Tokovinin and Acting Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to NATO Yuri Gorlach hosted high-ranking Belgian officials, representatives of European institutions, diplomatic corps, organisations of Russian compatriots, Russian Orthodox Church, civil society of Belgium and the media.
On 12 June 1990 the first Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Russia, which proclaimed supremacy of the Russian Constitution and its laws. Starting from 1992 it is celebrated as a National Holiday, the Day of Russia.
