Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in a ministerial meeting among six international mediators (Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the USA and France) and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
The participants in the meeting held an intensive and detailed discussion on the current state of affairs with the Iranian nuclear programme, stating that considerable progress had been made in the dialogue between the six-nation group and Iran. They also considered in full all possible options for political compromise and technical solutions to the remaining issues.
Sergey Lavrov noted with satisfaction that the positions of each side on practically the entire range of outstanding issues had converged significantly in recent time. Principles of gradualism and reciprocity proposed by Russia played a key role and formed the basis of the dialogue, in addition to a number of Russian conceptual, political, and technical ideas and proposals that were taken into account during the talks. Expressing certainty that it was possible to reach an agreement in the presence of the political will, the Russian minister urged the continuation of the intensive negotiation effort at a political and expert levels in the interests of a settlement.
