Obituary of Vasily Likhachev, Former Russian Permanent Representative to the EC

It is with profound regret that the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Multilateral Cooperation Department of MFA announce that Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Vasily Likhachev passed away suddenly on 8 April 2019.

Vasily Likhachev was born on 5 January 1952 in the city of Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod).

In 1991-1995 he held an office of Vice-president of the Republic of Tatarstan. Vasily Likhachev was the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan and Deputy Chair of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in 1995-1998.

He served as Permanent Representative of Russia to the European Communities in 1998-2003.

Vasily Likhachev was a member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in 2004-2010. In 2010-2011 he held the post of Deputy Minister of Justice of the Russia Federation. Vasily Likhachev was a deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in 2011-2016. In 2016-2018 he worked as member of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation.
