Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gennady Gatilov meets Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva

On 18 September Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gennady Gatilov held a meeting with European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva.

The parties discussed topical issues and prospects of Russia-EU collaboration in the field of civil protection and emergency response, as well as humanitarian situation in Syria and a number of African states.

The importance was emphasized to provide neutral and non-politicised humanitarian assistance to the Syrian population in need with full respect for fundamental humanitarian principles and the coordinating role of the UN.

Mr Gatilov shared information on Russian humanitarian supplies to Syria through bilateral channels and financial support for the activities of UN and ICRC institutions in the country.

Ms Georgieva highly evaluated to Russian efforts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Syria.

The Commissioner also positively assessed the work of Russia’s EMERCOM Regional Centre in the city of Niš, Serbia, reaffirming the intention to cooperate with it in addressing the effects of natural disasters in countries of the region.
