Comment by Permanent Mission of Russia to the EU

The statement “On the extended illegal detention of Ukrainian servicemen” made by the European External Action Service Spokesperson on 17 April 2019 is puzzling. The European Union demands to immediately and unconditionally” release the detained Ukrainian servicemen who illegally incursed into Russian territorial waters.

Such interference by the EU into independent legal proceedings in Russia is blatantly at odds with the recent comment by Margaritis Schinas, Spokesperson of the European Commission, regarding the arrest of Julian Assange, who said that the EU is not interfering into trials (“When judges speak, executives should shut up”). Taken together, this is another evidence of double standards practiced by the EU.

We would like to draw once again the attention of our colleagues from the European External Action Service to the fact that the above-mentioned Ukrainian citizens are currently under investigation, and attempts to exert pressure constitute direct interference not only in judicial proceedings, but also in internal affairs of the Russian Federation.
