We express our serious concern with the escalation of tensions on the border of South Ossetia and Georgia provoked by construction of a Georgian police checkpoint in the vicinity of the South Ossetian village of Tsnelis.
These provocative actions have been taken against the background of Tbilisi repeatedly rejecting Tskhinval’s proposal to launch talks for delimitation and demarcation of the border. In such circumstances South Ossetian side is forced to conduct all the engineering works at the border unilaterally. They are aimed at establishing safety of the population and preventing incidents of various kinds. It is a sovereign right of South Ossetia, as of any other state.
Throughout all recent months Tbilisi has been deliberately mounting tensions at the border by way of provocative actions and political propaganda campaigns carried out with support of Western countries. This hardly facilitated addressing the protracted border issue, heating the environment in the region instead and resulted in current escalation in the end.
We call upon the parties to exercise restraint and continue constructive discussions on outstanding issues within the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism as well as Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in South Caucasus.
