Comment by Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Mission to the EU Kirill Logvinov on a new anti-Russian sanctions’ regime set up by the European Union, 27 May 2024

It took the EU an astonishingly long time to finally introduce a sanctions regime specifically aimed at our country – “in view of the situation in Russia”. In fact, it is of an open-ended and unlimited nature. This shows that Brussels’ anti-Russian course is a deliberate and long-term policy.

The illegitimate restrictions introduced today, and apparently others to follow, punish – as the EU sees it – Russia for its independent policy, defence of its sovereign choice, and refusal to give up its national interests. The very name of the regime is regarded by the EU as a formal basis for blacklisting any Russian citizen or legal entity that does not fit into the West's vision of Russia and its future. Alas, the West is incapable of understanding that, whatever its efforts, no restrictions can impose on our country a model of development that contradicts its own priorities.
