Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov on the Libyan crisis

Comment for Politico Europe by Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the EU Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov on the situation in Libya, 31 January 2017

Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov: Since the very outset of the Libyan crisis Russia has been promoting the principle of inclusive dialogue as the only way towards a lasting peace and reconciliation in the country. We support the UN-led efforts aimed at reaching mutually acceptable arrangements that will finally allow the Libyans to address pressing issues the country is facing, including the threat of terrorism. Moscow stands ready to support the Libyan people on the path to peace and stability. In this context, we maintain active contacts with all influential Libyan figures, including Fayez Al-Sarraj, Ahmed Maiteeq, Khalifa Haftar and Aguila Saleh Issa. A national consensus in Libya can only be achieved on the basis of a comprehensive agreement that would involve all the responsible Libyan actors. And, undoubtedly, it is only up to the Libyans themselves to determine the personalities to run the country. This should not and cannot be envisaged or imposed by external actors.
