Roundtable «Combating Internet piracy» held in Brussels

On October 18, 2016 an international roundtable “Combating Internet piracy: international approaches” was held in Brussels co-chaired by the Head of the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) Mr. Alexander Zharov and the President and Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa of the US Motion Pictures Association Mr. Stan McCoy.

The event brought together executives of Russian media companies, business associations of the creative industries and production companies, representatives of Permanent Missions of the Russian Federation and the USA to the EU, Directorate-General for Trade of the European Commission, French and British national organisations involved in the sphere of copyright protection, and consulting companies.

A number of urgent issues was discussed, related to strengthening mechanisms of protection of copyright in the digital environment and legal tools of combating Intellectual Property Rights violations, including blocking pirate sites.

The participants adopted a joint communique that acknowledges the need to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against IPR violations on the Internet piracy and to continue sharing experiences in improving appropriate legislation, and law enforcement practices in Russia, EU and USA. It also highlights the key role of regulators in IPR protection in the digital environment as well as some of the positive trends in the fight against Internet piracy in Russia.
